Connect AI Assistants to CarGurus with the MCP Connector

Overview

You can link AI assistants to CarGurus to search for vehicle listings and retrieve detailed vehicle information using natural language. The CarGurus MCP connector is published in the Claude connector directory and the ChatGPT plugin store.

Connect via Claude

Enable

1. Go to Claude.ai and open Settings
2. Select Connectors
3. Search for CarGurus and select it
4. Click Connect and follow the prompts
5. Start a new chat
6. You can now ask Claude to search for vehicles — try: "Get me Toyota Camrys under $40k in LA"
7. If Claude asks you permission to use CarGurus, reply back with a ‘yes’
8. CarGurus MCP displays an interactive UI widget as shown below:

Disable temporarily

1. Start a new chat in Claude
2. Select the settings icon in the chat bar
3. Under Connectors, toggle CarGurus off

The connector remains authorized and can be toggled back on at any time.

Disconnect fully

1. Go to Settings → Connectors
2. Find CarGurus and select the ⋯ (More) menu
3. Choose Disconnect and confirm

Connect via ChatGPT

Enable

1. Open ChatGPT and go to Settings → Plugins and Browse for Plugins
2. Search for CarGurus and click the '+' icon to connect
3. In a new chat, click the + icon and add CarGurus from the enabled apps
4. You can now ask ChatGPT to search for vehicles — try: "Get me Toyota Camrys under $40k in LA"

Disable

1. Go to Settings → Apps & Connectors
2. Find CarGurus, select Manage → Disconnect

Troubleshooting

Can't find CarGurus in the connector directory

• If on a Team/Enterprise plan, check with your admin — the connector may be disabled org-wide
• Try searching "CarGurus" in the connector search bar

Connector connected but tools don't respond

• Disconnect and reconnect the connector from Settings → Connectors
• Make sure the tool permissions are enabled for CarGurus connector
• Start a fresh chat and re-enable the connector

FAQs

Do I need a CarGurus account to use this?

No — the connector uses publicly available CarGurus listing data. No CarGurus login is required.

Can the connector write or modify anything on CarGurus?

No — it is strictly read-only.

Does it search non-US listings?

Not currently — only US listings are supported.

How many results does a search return?

Up to 20 listings per search.

What happens if my admin disables the connector?

If your organization admin disables third-party integrations, you will not be able to connect or use the CarGurus connector. Contact your admin to request access.

Why isn't CarGurus showing results for my location?

Make sure to include a US ZIP code in your query (e.g., "near 02140") or name a US city. The connector uses the ZIP code of the named city if no ZIP is provided. Non-US locations are not supported.
