Discontinuation of Private Listings on CarGurus

Beginning June 27, 2024 CarGurus will begin to retire private listings on our website.

What exactly will happen on June 27?

Around 7 am on June 27, users will no longer be able to post a new private listing, upgrade to featured listings, or renew/re-open a current listing on the CarGurus website. CarGurus will continue to provide other convenient options to sell your car, including 100% online or to a local dealer (depending on region). Explore your options here.

I have an active listing. What does this mean for me?

Rest assured that you’ll continue to enjoy all benefits and features of this service until your listing expires (with the exception of upgrading to a featured listing). After 7 am on June 27, you will no longer be able to extend or upgrade your private listing. Your listing will expire on July 27, or 30 days after you last extended your listing, whichever date comes first.

Why is CarGurus doing this?

This decision was made with the best interests of our valued customers in mind. By prioritizing resources toward other areas of our business that align more closely with our long-term goals and objectives, we believe we will be best positioned to continue providing customers like you with a robust set of features that help you shop, buy, and sell with confidence and ease.

Can I extend my listing before it expires so I can continue beyond June 27?

Yes. You can extend your listing for free up until 7 am on June 27. Your listing will then be extended for the standard 30 days. You will not be able to extend after that date and time.

I want to list my car before the June 27 date. Is that possible?

Absolutely! You can privately list your car up until around 7 am on June 27. Your listing will remain posted 30 days after you list, with access to all benefits and features of this service until your listing expires. Extensions and upgrades will not be available, though, after June 27.

As a seller, will I have access to my messages after June 27?

You will have access to your messages until your listing expires, 30 days after your last extension. If you are actively engaged with a potential buyer close to your expiration date, we encourage you to move your communication to an alternative platform so you do not lose the momentum.

Can I upgrade to a featured listing?

Prior to 7 am on June 27, featured listings are absolutely possible! Unfortunately, after the morning of June 27, you will no longer be able to upgrade to a featured listing.

As a buyer, I’m in active conversations to possibly purchase a privately listed car. What does this mean for me?

CarGurus will continue to support private listings and all related functionality until those listings expire. With this upcoming transition, we encourage buyers and sellers to move communications to a different platform, otherwise those interactions and contact information will be lost.

I’m a buyer and like being able to purchase from a private seller. What can I do now?

As the #1 visited digital auto platform for shopping, buying, and selling new and used vehicles in the U.S., CarGurus gives shoppers access to the widest selection of listings from the largest network of dealers - all backed by unbiased price ratings and dealer reviews. Start your search on our trusted listings marketplace and enjoy the added convenience of digital shopping and financing tools that help buyers purchase from a dealer with greater confidence and ease.

How can I sell my car after you remove the Private Listing option?

CarGurus continues to provide other convenient options to sell your car, including 100% online or to a local dealer (depending on region). Explore your options here. If you would like to still list privately, there are a number of other websites and companies that allow you to do so.
