Post Purchase Issues for Private Sales

CarGurus is unable to assist in post-purchase disputes. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Undisclosed mechanical issues
  • Undisclosed cosmetic issues
  • Miscommunication of trim level, options, or packages

We always encourage shoppers to do their due diligence when purchasing a vehicle. Here are some tips on how to do an in-person inspection:

  • Please print a copy of the listing to compare against the vehicle itself
  • Purchase a vehicle history report
  • Take a test drive
  • Check all areas of the car (interior, exterior, under the hood, under the car)
  • Take the vehicle to a trusted mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection

We encourage shoppers to take additional steps if purchasing a vehicle sight unseen. This includes:

  • Printing a copy of the listing for your records
  • Purchasing a vehicle history report
  • Requesting additional photos
  • Getting a pre-purchase inspection from a third party (Note: Companies like YourMechanic and Lemon Squad can travel on your behalf to provide an analysis of the vehicle’s condition)
